Photo: Girls Camp 1984

Here is a photo sent in by Michelle (Dick) Barker. Stake Girls Camp, 1984.

Do you recognize any of the young women? How about any of the leaders? And who is the lone brother in the middle?

WOW! What memories! As I look over my dear friends, Pam, April, Tandy, Jill, Michelle, Shonna, Kaylee, Suzanne, Krista and so many more...I am reminded of all the wonderful times we shared as we grew up together and grew in our testimonies of the gospel. Although many years and miles have come between us, their infnluence is still fresh in my life. How important it is to have good friends but what a blessing to have friends that strengthen you and make you better. It was at the 1984 Girls Camp that I remember sitting on a rock along a hillside, quite a distance from camp, taking alone with Krista Gates Yates. We talked about many things. We were bound and determined to someday go to BYU and marry BYU football players or better yet, brothers. WE all shared dreams, helped build our testimonies, and influenced each other in ways that made us who we are today. Yes, years have flown by but to this day I still tell stories about some of these good friends in this photo. The Cypress Stake has a tradition of strong youth programs- it is an investment that pays! I will never forget the youth leaders that made great sacrifices and made such a difference! My heart will forever be in the Cypress stake! Thanks you for the legacy!

How well I remember this wonderful picture. I have a collection of about 10 of them, each of a diferent year. I am the mother of Krista Gates Yates! I was also the "mother" of ALL of those young ladies. They were choice and dear to me. Theresa Weaver's mother is standing right next to me in the white short sleeved blouse. (Nancy Weaver) They are all great girls and great leaders.
Don and Nancy Lake were there, Don as a Priesthood leader for that year. His mother, Dale is standing in the back row, too. I could have named all of the people in it then. I can almost do it now, but I will spare you. The leaders across the back are,R. to L.: Diane Johnson,Nancy Weaver,Myself,(Guelda Gates)On the tip of my toungue, Dale Lake,Vivian Cuff,my counselor in Y. W. Presidency, Rhonda Skousen(I think but not 100% sure) 2nd row down, 4th in, Jean Pummel (I think she was camp director that year)3rd row down, 7th in, Sandy Evans.
How dear this pictur is. I hope every young woman in it have gone on to do as well as Michelle Dick Barker, Theresa Waever Earl, Shonna Waever. and Krista Gates Yates have. I left Krista's this very morning to travel back home to St. George, she is in Saratoga Springs, UT She is counselor in her wrad Primary and is a lovely mother of 5 and a dear daughter. She has shared many times how the girls That Teresa mentioned still correspond and try to see each other whenever possible. I felt as though each of the pictured young women were my sweet daughters at the time of that camp and that each of the good women who went to be leaders were my eternal sisters. Thanks for the memories! Guelda Gates

The darling baby in the photo is Valerie Lake. I was stake campcrafter leader that year and was still nursing Valerie so she went to camp with me. Needless to say, she wasn't put down all week---there was always a line of girls wanting to hold her.

This was my last year at girls camp. My best friend and former stake member, Amy Stiles, came back to California to be my "buddy". And my sister Diane Jones was our counselor. What a great year. I haven't been to a girls camp since. But as a Beehive advisor in Allen Texas, I get to go to Beehive camp in a month. The rest of the young women get to go on a pioneer trek, so the Beehives are having their own girls camp. I can't wait. I hope I can be half the leader that Sister Gates & Sister Skousen were. Those were good days in the Cypress Stake!! Elizabeth Brown Anderson from the Buena Park 1st Ward!

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES! For some reason I didn't have a copy of that years Girl's Camp. Thanks for sending it in Michelle! Every summer I remember the fun times we had at girls camp. But when I describe it to my friends in Utah, they say, "Camp? That's not camp, that's a vacation!" Cabins, bunk beds, crafts, a cafateria with cute boys serving the food, a swimming pool, and who can forget the fun swing!
I will be forever grateful to our awesome Camp and Young Women Leaders who made our Girl's Camps so FUN every year! I also remember sitting on that rock with Taressa and planning out our futures and sharing our growing testimonies. My experiences with the girls in this picture will always be very dear to me. They were a sorce of strength to me and helped me to make good choices. I pray that my own children will be blessed with friends like these. I love you guys! Krista "Gates" Yates
